Why is it important to recycle?
Recycling has environmental and economic benefits. For every tonne of waste which is recycled rather than disposed of there is a saving. Recycling also ‘saves’ materials and means they can be used again. This reduces the need to use new materials such as oil for plastic. When items, such as plastic bottles, are not recycled they are ‘lost’. Disposal of these items has a negative impact on the environment.  Last year people in Coventry produced a total of 123,173 tonnes of waste, just over a third of this was recycled, composted or reused.
What is Coventry Recycling Club?
Coventry Recycling Club is a scheme run by Coventry City Council to reward residents for recycling. The scheme is fully funded by the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) Weekly Collection Support Scheme.
How many points will I earn?
You’ll earn points when recycling improves in your area. You can see which area you’re part of on the Recycling and Waste page. We’ll look at how much recycling and general rubbish was collected on each collection day in your area last month and compare it to the same month last year. You will earn points for each collection. If you’ve recycled more than you did last year, or reduced the amount of general rubbish you throw away we’ll reward you with points. The number of points you will get depends on how much more you recycled or how much less you threw away.
What do Good Causes get in return for my points?
Three Good Causes are shown on the website every month and you can choose which ones you give your points to. Each month all three Good Causes will get a share of the funding pot of up to £5,000. The funding pot will increase as more people join the club and, of course, the more people recycle.
How will Good Causes be chosen?
Charities, groups and organisations based in Coventry can apply to become a good cause. Once an application is approved the good cause is added to a list. Each month three good causes are randomly selected from the list for you to support. Charities, groups and organisations can find out more and apply by visiting www.coventry.gov.uk/recyclingclub.
